…and just like that, I’m unemployed…

So the big news is I got fired. :-(

Okay, not really, but it does feel a bit like it. The short version is that the company that hired my boss (and therefore me) apparently was unable to secure adequate insurance on the Greenville,SC project and the hospital decided to award the project to the runner up instead. The part that feels like getting fired is that we really had been hired for the project, and we had already started working. It would have been much easier if we just hadn't got the job in the first place.

I've still got a day or two of work left on the OSUMC archival project and then I'll be officially looking for work. So…anyone out there got any good job leads for me? :-)

First Day Report

Filed under: The Greenville Project — starvingplaywright @ 5:39 pm

Today consisted mostly of meetings. The big lesson to take away from today is: the less people in attendance at a meeting, the more productive your time will be. The first meeting had probably about 20 people and it was very chaotic. The smaller meetings held in the afternoon were exponentially more productive.

My first impression of Greenville, SC…

Filed under: The Greenville Project, Updates — starvingplaywright @ 7:42 pm

…is that it's green. Very beautiful surrounding scenery, with lots of trees and other vegetation. Of course this first impression is based on a single trip between the airport and our hotel, so we'll see what Greenville itself is like. However, my only other visit to either of the Carolinas was to Greensboro, NC…which was also very green.

Change in Plans Already

Filed under: The Greenville Project, Updates — starvingplaywright @ 5:16 pm

So…we haven't really even started the new project and we've hit a stumbling block. The plan to accelerate the process via borrowing some carts from OSUMC was foiled. It's a long story, but the crucial pieces are, it's not going to happen, and it wasn't our fault. Time to figure out plan B. My boss and I will be flying to SC next Monday and spending a couple of days down there meeting with the hospital and coming up with a new solution.

Okay to Go

We got word today that we can start on the Greenville, SC project. We had been waiting until some final contract negotiations were worked out, and I assume this means that they were taken care of. What this means most immediately is that my boss and I will be driving a moving truck from Columbus, OH to Greenville, SC this next Monday (delivering some of the carts that were used on the OSUMC project) so that we can jump-start the design process for the new carts that will be used in SC. Anticipated return will be that Thursday. I will certainly prefer flying, but this will give us an opportunity to start planning our approach to this project.

Exciting News!

Filed under: The Greenville Project, Updates — starvingplaywright @ 4:59 pm

I just got a job! Or maybe I should say my boss just got us hired on a new project, which is great since the current project is steadily winding its way into non-existence, and we were facing the possibility of being between projects for awhile if this one didn't go through.

So. The company we are working for (as the project management team) was one of four bidders on a project very similar to the last job I've been involved with (i.e. robotic transport of materials at a hospital). My new job comes with the nifty title of 'assistant project manager' on a multi-million dollar project, so it will look great on a resume (not to mention the nifty pay increase and added responsibilities I'll have). It does mean my life as I know it will be changing drastically as I will be commuting to Greenville, SC for the next, oh 9 months at least. The current plan will be to work on location during the week, and fly back to Columbus, OH on (most) weekends. More details will follow…
